Traditional sex education is aimed at people who are cisgendered and specifically, straight able-bodied cis people; everybody else is excluded. Sex-ed is generally taught in a strictly technical manner, often about anatomy and reproduction, which ignores questions about LGBTQ identity, pleasure, and broader understandings of safety. In this setting, LGBTQ youth are disproportionately excluded from the conversation, ultimately resulting in unsafe sex practices which leads to much higher rates rates of STD transmission and teenage pregnancy.
