Studies show that LGBTQ individuals report much higher rates of drug and alcohol abuse than the general population. We often self-medicate with drugs and alcohol as a way to cope with negative feelings associated with family rejection, isolation, anxiety, and mistrust. Traditional 12 step programs are often not appropriate for LGBTQ people because they neglect to address the underlying feelings associated with the LGBTQ identity.
